Art <and care> between public and common space 

Deze lezing gaat over voorbeelden die de relatie tussen kunst, het maken van tentoonstellingen en de stad herdefiniëren. Of het nu gaat om een bottom-up actie of het navigeren door mogelijke tegenstrijdigheden die gepaard gaan met grootschalige stadsbrede tentoonstellingen: kunst kan zich bewegen binnen/tegen en voorbij de event-economie, consumptie en gentrificatie, en in plaats daarvan de stad transformeren en de sociale relaties die haar maken, opnieuw verbeelden. In dit proces blijkt het cruciaal om te onderhandelen over de grenzen tussen openbare en gemeenschappelijke ruimte. Terwijl de openbare ruimte verwijst naar stedelijk beleid van bovenaf, verwijst de gemeenschappelijke ruimte naar de stad zoals die vorm krijgt door collectieve creativiteit aan de basis. In dit gesprek wordt daarenboven het begrip zorg in de discussie betrokken, met als argument dat het de polariteit tussen publieke en gemeenschappelijke ruimte kan benoemen en nieuwe betekenissen kan creëren die de vloeiende grenzen ertussen blootleggen.

This talk will engage with examples that redefine relations between art, exhibition-making and the city. Whether acting from the bottom-up or navigating the contradictions that come with large-scale city-wide exhibitions, art can move within/against and beyond the event economy, consumption and gentrification, and rather, transform the city and re-imagine the social relations that make it. In this process, negotiating the boundaries between public and common space becomes crucial. While public space points to top-down urban policies, common space points to the city as it takes shape through grassroots collective creativity. This talk will insert the notion of care in the discussion, arguing that it can problematise the polarity between public and common space and create new meanings that reveal the fluid boundaries between them. 

Sevie Tsampalla is a curator based in Brussels. Her practice explores sociopolitical imaginaries that emerge when art, commoning practices and urban space come together. With a background in art history (BA and MA, University of Athens) and cultural studies (MA, KU Leuven), she was awarded a doctorate in exhibition studies by Liverpool John Moores University. Her research focuses on the relations and tensions between large-scale exhibitions and urban commons. Her practice spans involvement in collectives, collaborations with artist-led spaces and biennials, in Greece, Belgium and the UK. She was assistant curator at Liverpool Biennial, led city-wide projects for Tate Liverpool and S.M.A.K.-Gent. She collaborated with the collective Nomadic Architecture (Athens), artist-led spaces such as AirSpace gallery (Stoke-on-Trent), Castlefield Gallery (Manchester) and the Pianofabriek (Brussels). She is currently co-curating Bruges Triennial 2024 and she will be a curatorial resident in Helsinki in the summer of 2023 (HIAP).
